THE DEEP END • LOOK AT THE LAMB

 In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist is inviting us to look at Jesus, look closely. He calls Jesus the ‘lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world’. We say these words often at Mass and today we are invited to meditate on them more closely. What does it mean? The lamb is one who is sacrificed… the sins of the world are many, broken relationships with one another at every turn. Today we are asked to think especially of Refugees and Migrants and the sins committed against them. The treatment of these groups who are marginalised, exiled from their homes due to war, famine, drought, unemployment is often unjust and is part of what Pope Francis refers to as a culture of ‘slave labour’. These outcast groups are frequently treated with disrespect, racism, condemnation and resentment. How can we reconcile these situations?

 Pope Francis’ message for today may guide us closer to understanding the message of John the Baptist in the Gospel: ‘Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity… A change of attitude towards migrants and refugees is needed on the part of everyone, moving away from attitudes of defensiveness and fear, indifference and marginalisation – all typical of a throwaway culture – towards attitudes based on a culture of encounter, the only culture capable of building a better, more just and fraternal world’. ECUMENICAL SERVICE

An Ecumenical Service with Canon Paul Willoughby, will take place next Tuesday evening, 21^st January at Bantry Hospital Chapel at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Feast of St. Blaise—Monday February 3rd

The Blessing of Throats (using the candles from the previous day’s Feast) will take place at the morning 10.00am Mass in Bantry.

There will also be a Prayer Service with Blessing of Throats in Bantry Church at 7.30pm on Monday evening Feb 3^rd.

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes: Tuesday 11^th February. World Day of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Sick (Anointing) will be administered after the 10.00am Mass in St. Finbarr’s Church. All who might be in need of the Sacrament are invited to receive it.

McGee's Christmas lights: The amount raised amounted to seven hundred euro(€700.00) and we wish to thank everyone for their generous support. Proceeds go to Bantry Hospice.

Men Wanted - The Glengarriff Theatre Group is looking for men who wish to perform in amateur productions of plays. The group is limited in the type and number of plays it can put on due to a lack of male actors. If you are interested in  joining the group there will be a meeting at  8pm in the Glengarriff  Parochial Hall on Thursday, January 23. Come along and meet an interesting group of people. We are hoping  to be able to put on a production in the April/May timeframe

 Bingo  will be  held at  Mealagh  Valley  Community  Centre  on Thursday  January  23rd.   at 8.30P.M..    There  will be a Jackpot  on  the night.  Usual  Bus  Service  from  Durrus  at  7.45P.M.  &  Bantry  at  8.05P.M..  Your  Support  would be greatly  appreciated.

Archaeology  in Bantry this Tuesday night !

Come to the Maritime Hotel this Tuesday night 21st Jan at 8.00pm.  Bantry Historical Society is hosting a talk by William O Brien, Professor of Archaeology UCC.  Title:-  Children of the Sun;  Bronze Age Religion and Megalithic Monuments in Bantry Area
