The Deep End – The Other Nine
Some of us will be familiar with the prayer to St. Joseph of Cupertino for success in examinations. Many of us regularly turn to St. Anthony for help in finding a lost item, while others enlist the help of St. Jude for particularly ‘hopeless cases’, or Padre Pio when a loved one is sick or in hospital. We are very good at prayer when we need something, and have no problem turning to God in times of strife. But what about after the storm has passed?
The leper in today’s Gospel offers us a lesson in gratitude and faith. It is easy to ask for help, to call out ‘Jesus! Master! Take pity on us!’ It is not so easy to appreciate the implications of what God is doing in our lives.
Of course we would all like to think that we would be the one leper who came back to give thanks to Jesus when he saw he was healed. But in reality, are we more like the nine who forgot to give thanks? What Jesus wants to know is, ‘The other nine, where are they?’ I’d imagine they were so overjoyed to be healed, they simply got on with their lives! Perhaps over time the memory of this great thing God had done for them simply faded.
Jesus told the leper who returned that his faith had saved him. All ten were healed, yet this man had a fuller experience of the healing hand of Jesus. And his life was surely changed because of it.                   Triona Doherty

What does it mean to learn from Jesus how to pray?
Learning from Jesus how to pray means entering into his boundless trust, joining in his prayer, and being led by him, step by step, to the Father.
The disciples, who lived in community with Jesus, learned to pray by listening to and imitating Jesus, whose whole life was prayer. Like him, they had to be watchful and strive for purity of heart, to give up everything for the coming of God's kingdom, to forgive their enemies, to trust boldly in God, and to love him above all things. By this example of devotion, Jesus invited his disciples to say to God Almighty, "Abba, dear Father". If we pray in the Spirit of Jesus, especially the Lord's Prayer, we walk in Jesus' shoes and can be sure that we will arrive unfailingly in the heart of the Father.

BANTRY PARISH NEWSLETTER
The  twenty seventh Sunday in ordinary time
   Sunday 6th October 2013

DAY FOR LIFE – Sunday October 6th.
Each year during the month of October the Church celebrates a Day for Life. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Care for Life: It’s worth it – Professing Our Faith in a Culture of Life’. Pope Francis said ‘Jesus teaches us to care for life because it is the image of God, who is absolute life. We cannot announce anything else but life, and from the beginning to the end …’ The Church strives to protect the lives of unborn children and their mothers and to support them – practically, emotionally and spiritually. The Church wishes to show its care for and closeness to those who for whatever reason, believe their own lives are no longer worthwhile and are tempted to give up on life itself. Catholic teaching holds up the vision that no person should ever be marginalised or set aside. All have an inherent value & worth that comes not from governments or states but from the very heart of God. We all have a role to play - a call to work together for the culture of life.

Prayer for an Increase of Faith

Heavenly Father, we are all your children,
Sons and daughters of the same loving Father
and for this we praise You.
Your Gift of Faith, handed down through the years by family and friends, is cherished by us.
We pray for all our brothers and sisters,
especially for those who have given up the practice of their Faith.
You love them no less in their absence. You have said that you will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the wounded and make the weak strong.
May Your love for them be visible in us.
Give them light and the strength to turn to you with all their hearts and take their place at the table that You have prepared for them.
Father, give us all an increase of Faith and may we try to love one another as much as you love us.
We make our prayer through Christ, Our Lord.
+John Buckley, Bishop of Cork & Ross

Bantry Parish Pilgrimage to Gougane Barra.

The first pilgrimage to Gougane Barra from Bantry Parish took place last Sunday. The Community/Hospitality Group of the newly formed Parish Assembly organised this event with great support from the primary schools of the parish. The primary schools, through the Youth & Family Group, provided an array of art work relating to St Finbarr and his monastery at Gougane Barra. Parishioners were delighted to see the three churches of the parish decorated with this wonderful work of the children of the parish. The organisers express their sincere gratitude to all who took part in the pilgrimage and everyone who helped make this event a success. A bus full of pilgrims travelled from Bantry and revived the old tradition of walking from the Calvary scene to the Oratory reciting the Rosary. Mass was concelebrated at the Oratory and the homily, which was most inspiring and relevant to the Year of Faith, was preached by Archbishop Dermot Clifford. Fr. Sean Crowley accompanied us on our pilgrimage. Refreshments were appreciated in the local cafe before returning home.
