How are priests paid?

It is often assumed that priests get paid through the Offertory Collection taken up at Masses in the parish every weekend. However, this is not the case. The Offertory Collection goes to fund the day to day running and maintenance of the parish.

Easter Sunday and Christmas Day are the only two offertory collections in the year that contribute to the income of the priests of the parish. The proceeds from these two collections together with the Station Dues, November Novena Offerings and Stole Fees make up the priests income. Stole Fees are the donations given to priests at Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals.

Fr. Martin and Fr. Seán are very grateful for the constant financial and prayerful support they receive from the people of the parish.

The Bantry Parish and Friends Pilgrimage will take place from the 22^nd to 27^th September 2015 (Ex. Cork) with Full Board accommodation in the ‘Agena Hotel’.

FUNDRAISING GARDEN PARTY St. Joseph's Unit, Bantry General Hospital   Sunday 24th May 2015 from 12.30 - 4.30pm. 

at the Roof-top Garden of St Joseph’s Unit and the adjoining Hospital grounds. Grand Opening at 1pm by Eilish O'Carroll who plays "Winnie McGoogan" of Mrs. Brown's Boys TV and World Stage Fame. FUN FOR The Garden Party is organised by Bay Lions Club and the Residents, Management & Staff of St Joseph’s Unit and Bantry General Hospital.

The idea is to offer the residents, who are not in a position to enjoy their Community as we do, the opportunity to “Bring a little of the outside world to their doorstep”. There will be something for everyone: Entertainment, Music, Competitions, Games, Stalls: Cakes sales, Brick-a-Brac, Raffles, Plants sale, Residents Art Exhibition, Health Expo, Face painting and Balloon Art. Any unwanted gifts and resalable Brick-A- Brac items (excluding clothes and foot wear) would be welcome. They can be given into St. Joseph’s Unit from May 10^th Please label them clearly as - “Towards the Garden Party”. Donations of food and baked items can be brought in on the day (24^th May). Please come along and make it a great family outing while supporting the residence of St. Joseph's Unit. Bantry Bay Lions Club members wish to acknowledge the tremendous response from Bantry residents and the wider communities for the Nepal Earthquake Relief collection held in Bantry town last Saturday.  The total  from the collection and donations amounted to €2,528.  A huge thank you to everyone who contributed so generously. We are proud to report that 100% of all funds raised by Lions are channelled directly to the respective charities and disasters as Lions members pay annual dues that are used to cover all administration costs.

Second Collection for the Pastoral Development office in the Diocese: The annual second collection to fund the work of the Cork and Ross Pastoral Development Office will be taken up next weekend Saturday/Sunday 9^th and 10^th May.  This annual collection funds the costs of training for parish assemblies; ministry to young people; training for parish ministries; resources for ongoing formation such as courses, conferences.

CoAction Bantry AGM

CoAction Bantry will be holding its AGM at their Centre in Slip on Wednesday next, May 6th at 8pm. All are welcome.

Bantry Bay Lions 10^th Anniversary Charter Night Dinner at the Westlodge Hotel on Saturday, May 23. Dress code will be a lounge suit and a 4 course dinner will be served. There will be a raffle and music provided by Tolly Franklin. The evening starts at 7.30pm with meal served at 8pm. Tickets at €30 per person are available from Marion Rouse, Club Secretary, at 086-2416508 or 027-61095. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening to celebrate 10 successful years of the Bantry Bay Lions Club.

Bantry Defibrillator Group members will be doing CPR demonstrations and giving step by step guides to performing good effective CPR and how to use a defibrillator on Wed May 6th at 8pm in the Boys Club.  We need new members to come along and join the group and learn these life saving skills.All welcome 

There will be a Blood Pressure Clinic held at the Bantry Primary Care Health Centre, Maritime Hotel, Bantry on Wednesday, May 6th 2015 from 2.30pm to 4pm.  All are welcome to attend this free, confidential service being offered by the Health Service Executive and your local Public Health Nurse. 

It is important for people of all ages to have their blood pressure checked on a regular basis

Over 600 cyclists expected to arrive in Bantry at 7pm on Mon. evening as part of the Malin to Mizen cycle against suicide. We would ask people to come out on the streets to cheer those cyclists on for such a worthy cause,as they make their way up to Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai. Many cyclists will overnight in Bantry & leave town at 9.30am on Tuesday morning heading for Mizen Head. A big thank you to all the homes in the area who offered to host a cyclist overnight.

Beginning May 2015 there will be Baptisms in Kealkil Church only on the second Sunday of each month at 11.45am.

Baptisms will be held every Saturday at 4pm in Bantry Church.

For the time being there will be no Baptisms  in Coomhola Church.

Celebrating and praying for Vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life. Pope Francis has designated this year – the Year for Consecrated Life – so we invite the priests, religious and people of the Diocese to join together to give thanks for the vocations of the past, to celebrate the vocations in our diocese today and to pray in hope for vocations of the future in our Diocesan liturgy on Friday 24^th April  at 7:30pm at Saint Michael’s Church, Blackrock, Cork. Cork ARC Cancer Support House are delighted to announce that with the assistance of Bantry Hospice, they will be extending their services into West Cork with the opening of a new support centre at ‘The Bungalow’, Gories in Bantry, Co Cork. The new centre in Bantry opened on Tuesday 14 April 2015.

For many years people from West Cork have been travelling to Cork for cancer support services and having this new centre in Bantry will help to avoid these long journeys. The Bantry centre will serve the needs of the local community as well as the wider regions of West Cork from Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Skibbereen, Sheep’s Head, Mizen and Beara Peninsulas and their islands, and beyond to Kenmare, South Kerry.

At the support centre in Bantry visitors can expect to receive a warm welcome from one of the trained volunteers in a tranquil, safe, and home-like atmosphere.  All services are provided free of charge and include massage, reflexology and counselling by appointment.

The support centre will be open on Tuesdays from 10am to 4pm when anyone affected by cancer can telephone or drop in, without an appointment, and talk in confidence with one of the trained volunteer listeners. Contact: Patricia Lyne Tel: 083 1988580 or email: westcork@cancersupport.ie

BANTRY BLUES LADIES GAA - Training for u-7 and u-8 girls  has now commenced on Wednesday evenings from 5.30 to 6.30 in Wolfe Tone Park.  All girls born from 2008 onwards are welcome

DROMCLOUGH N.S.will be holding a ‘’New and Used Clothing Collection” fundraising event on Friday 24^th of April. You can drop bags to the school at 9.30am on the morning of the collection. Daffodil Day Success: The people of Bantry once again excelled in their generosity on Daffodil Day, raising €5,670 for the Irish Cancer Society. Maria Power who organised the day thanks all the volunteers & everyone who gave so generously to this worthy cause

ACCORD Marriage Education Facilitator: Are you interested in becoming a facilitator with Ireland’s leading provider of marriage preparation programmes? Would you like, as part of a team to meet couples preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage in the Catholic Church? Our training will provide you with a Special Purpose Award from the Pontifical University, St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. Accord facilitators work as part of a team, encouraging couples to engage in conversation with each other, discuss  relevant topics & consider future plans. This is all done in a secure, confidential, non-threatening environment.  He/she will facilitate group activities and discussions.
