Pastoral Teams for Funerals
Many older people remember what a wake in a house was like. When wakes were held in people’s houses, priests had little to do with the funeral rites until the body was brought to the church. It was the introduction of funeral homes that involved priests more, both on the Rosary night and for the prayers in the funeral home before the removal. In leading these services, priests replaced lay ministry; funeral teams restore the ministry of leading these rites to the lay faithful.
It is envisaged that funeral team members would share with the priest, or lead in the priest’s absence, the prayers in the family home or funeral home. They would also be available to help families navigate their way through the funeral rites. They can provide help to families struggling to find the right level of involvement in the funeral rituals and can support the family all the way, in a way that priests could not hope to.
Eight people from the parish attended this training for Pastoral Teams for Funerals in October 2014.
There will be a meeting of those who attended that training in St. Finbarr’s Church, Bantry on  Tuesday February 3rd after the 7.30pm Blessing of Throats.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
18th – 25th January
This week is a chance for everyone to seek a closer union with Christ. This year's theme comes to us from the churches of Brazil. Increasingly, in Brazil, some Christian groups compete with one another for a place on the mass media, for new members and for public funds.
The Brazilian churches have begun to recognise that intolerance should be dealt with in a positive way - respecting diversity and promoting dialogue as a permanent path of reconciliation and peace in fidelity to the gospel. We can share this        recognition.
The central event in Cork will this Year  take place in Ardfallen Church, Douglas Road, on Sunday 25th January 25th @ 7:30pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
