BANTRY PARISH NEWSLETTER
The Twenty third Sunday in ordinary time Sunday September 9th 2012

Dear Reader,

I have really enjoyed the last three weeks in your beautiful and vibrant parish. It has been a wonderful opportunity for very valuable practical experience, enabling me to put into practice much of what I have learned in seminary.

As many of you know, I am studying for our diocese in the Irish College in Rome, with about 10 other Irish students. I will soon begin, God willing, my fifth year of training. You get a real feel for how truly global our Church is in this Eternal City. Even our college is a microcosm; where we have men from Africa, Asia, South America and Europe. Sadly only a few years ago Fr Ragheed Ganni, who had been a student, was martyred along with four deacons after Sunday Mass in Iraq.

A typical day – after early rising we head to the chapel for Morning Prayer, followed by Mass. After breakfast we walk about 30 minutes through Rome past the Coliseum to our University, where classes begin at 8.30am. Classes finish at 12.15, and we head back for the rosary at 12.55, which is then followed by lunch. Afternoons vary between more classes, study or playing soccer against the other colleges in the Clericus Cup. The North Americans won it last year. Night time is spent with talks, prayer, occasionally a movie, and more study!

It really is a great privilege to be able to study in Rome. Only last year we were chosen to serve at the Pope’s Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday. These and other events such as the beatification of John Paul II keep us in touch with other students and pilgrims. Our college also hosts the city’s big St Patrick’s Day celebration as well as the commemoration of the Saints of Ireland on November 6th.

Until next week, Marius O'Reilly

We congratulate Oonagh Reynolds (Rathmines,Dublin) & John O’Sullivan (Dublin)
who were married in St. Finbarr’s Church, Bantry on Saturday, 1st September last.
We wish Oonagh & John long and happy lives together.
