The Deep End – Not One for Us

Fr. Timothy Radcliffe OP spoke recently (at the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin) of the importance of pop music for young people.

‘For young people today, popular music is of vast importance in articulating their sense of hope & joy & also sometimes their sorrow & distress. Surely if we are to attend to them with compassion, then we must value that music, open our ears to it, & catch its nuances… we must give thanks to the composers & singers who offer our young water in the desert. Surrely we must be open to the creativity of popular music & accept its gifts.’

How refreshing to think that goodness & inspiration can come from the most unexpected of sources.

The disciples receive a lesson in openness today. ‘Not one of us’ is how they refer to the man from outside the group who is claiming to work ‘in Jesus’ name’. But Jesus responds with a different way of looking at things; ‘Whoever is not against us is for us,’ he advises. Don’t knock anyone’s faith.

How receptive are we to the many voices we hear and to the people we come across from day to day? Are we tuned in so we can hear and appreciate goodness and wisdom in their many guises? Fr. Radcliffe talks of being ‘open to creativity’. We must let the Spirit move as it will, and keep our eyes and ears peeled.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Padre Pio Prayer Group

Next Friday 5th October is First Friday. There will be Rosary & Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in Bantry Church at 6.45pm followed by Holy Mass & the Padre Pio Prayer at 7.30pm.

Heart Health Information Evening

A Heart Health public awareness evening hosted by Bantry General Hospital and the West Cork Community Services, will take place in the Maritime Hotel, Bantry on Friday 5^th October 2012 from 6.30pm – 9pm.

Guest speaker, Dr. Peter Kearney, Consultant Cardiologist at Cork University Hospital will give a presentation on Heart Health at 7pm.

Information stands will focus on different aspects of your health including:

• Blood pressure
• Diabetes
• Diet/ Cholesterol
• Fitness levels
• Understanding your medication
• Know your entitlements and what supports are available for you

Everyone is welcome and admission is free.

 

 

Children’s Book Festival

The annual Children's Book Festival takes place at Bantry Library throughout October when children get the opportunity to meet and chat with some of their favourite writers like Mary Arrigan, Aileen McGovern, Babette Cole and Roisin Meaney. If any teacher of classes from schools in the Bantry area would like to attend any of the readings by these authors, they can book a slot by contacting the library on 027-50460.

A storytime for 4-8 year olds takes place on Saturday mornings during October at 11am (except Sat. 27th when the library will be closed for the bank holiday weekend).

 

 

 

Feastday of St. Finbarr - Tuesday, 25th September

Saint Finbar was the son of an artisan and a lady of the Irish royal court. Born in Connaught, Ireland, and baptized Lochan, he was educated at Kilmacahil, Kilkenny, where the monks named him Fionnbharr (white head) because of his light hair. He is also known as Bairre and Barr.

On a visit to Rome the Pope wanted to consecrate him a bishop but Saint Finbar was deterred by a vision. He notified the pope that God had reserved that honor to Himself and Saint Finbar was consecrated from heaven. He preached in southern Ireland and lived as a hermit on a small island at Lough Eiroe, on the river Lee. Saint Finbar founded a monastery that developed into the city of Cork and he was it's first bishop. His monastery became famous in southern Ireland and attracted numerous disciples.

Many extravagant miracles are attributed to him. Supposedly the sun did not set for two weeks after he died at Cloyne about the year 633. His feast day is September 25th. Saint Finbar is the patron of immigrants.

Parents Plus Parenting Programmes will be starting shortly in the Bantry area and there are still places available.

These Parents Plus Programmes are practical and positive parenting courses designed to support and empower parents to manage and solve discipline problems, to create satisfying and enjoyable family relationships and to help children and young people grow up and reach their full potential. The course runs for 8 weeks, two hours per session. There is no charge for the programme but a contribution of 3 to 5 euro a night would help to cover the cost of running the programme.
Early Years Programme (0 - 6 years) will be held on Monday evenings 7.30 - 9.30 pm.

Children's Programme (6 - 11 years) will be held on Tuesday evenings 7.30 - 9.30 pm.

Adolescent Programme (12 - 18 years) details have yet to be decided.

Bantry and District Cardiac Support Group

 Bantry Cardiac Support Group will resume their monthly meetings for the coming season on Tues Sept. 25^th at The Family Resource Centre Main Street at 8pm.

A local practice nurse with experience in working with and supporting people with cardiovascular problems has been invited to give a talk on related topics:

Blood Pressure

How to read Blood test results

Effects of Medication (bring along list of medications)

Importance of Diet and Exercise etc.

If requested Blood Pressure can be checked on the night.

The meeting is for people who have suffered a cardiac event such as Heart Attack, Angioplasty with or without Stents inserted or who have had cardiac surgery (by-pass surgery mitral valve surgery etc.) or any Cardiac related concerns.

A programme of events for the coming season will also be discussed.

Bantry Parish Pilgrimage to Lourdes

On the 2^nd of September I arrived in Lourdes for the first time. Anybody who has been there will know that those who are sick or infirm are the most important people in Lourdes. When I saw people in wheelchairs & in stretchers & indeed people who have other needs there it really reminded me of how lucky I am. In my lazier moments there I did think to myself wouldn’t it be great to be pushed around the place, especially on a hot day, but you wouldn’t be long realising how selfish a thought that is because people in those wheelchairs & stretchers would give anything for the freedom I have of being able to go everywhere myself. Wouldn’t it be amazing if they could, like Jesus said to the paralytic, pick up their stretchers and walk. During the time in Lourdes you will hear the story of St. Bernadette many times. At the time of the apparition in Lourdes St. Bernadette and her family were among the poorest of the poor. 

Our Lady has appeared to people that weren’t considered important. St. Bernadette was a child of a very poor family, Our Lady appeared in Knock to people who in 1879 were on the verge of a famine and involved in a bitter Land War, she appeared in Fatima in 1917 to children who should only have been seen and not heard and in recent years many people go to Medjugorge to pray to Our Lady in a country that has a very tragic history right up until the 1990’s. We might like to think that we are the people that should be listened to but in Lourdes, Knock, Fatima and other places, Our Lady is telling us otherwise.

Congratulations to the Bantry Junior Ladies who won the County Championship Final last Saturday defeating Courcey Rovers in a thrilling game. The match doubled up as a West Cork semi-final so the ladies earned themselves a place into the West Cork Final. They will be playing Caheragh - details of that game to be decided and will be posted locally and on our website www.bantryblues.com . Well done to the trainers and players involved and a mile buiochas to the families and supporters who have followed them along the way to this great achievement.

Feastday of Andrew Kim Taegan

Ss. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean priest, Paul Chong Hasang, a catechist, & 101 others were martyred during the persecutions of the Church in Korea, 1839-1867.

This first native Korean priest was the son of Korean converts. His father, Ignatius Kim, was martyred during the persecution of 1839 and was beatified in 1925. After Baptism at the age of 15, Andrew traveled 1,300 miles to the seminary in Macao, China. After six years he managed to return to his country through Manchuria. He was arrested, tortured and finally beheaded at the Han River near Seoul, the capital. Paul Chong Hasang was a lay apostle and married man, aged 45.

Christianity came to Korea during the Japanese invasion in 1592. A home Church began. When a Chinese priest managed to enter secretly a dozen years later, he found 4,000 Catholics, none of whom had ever seen a priest. Seven years later there were 10,000 Catholics. Religious freedom came in 1883.

When Pope John Paul II visited Korea in 1984 he canonized, besides Andrew and Paul, 98 Koreans and three French missionaries who had been martyred between 1839 and 1867. Among them were bishops and priests, but for the most part they were lay persons: 47 women, 45 men.

"The Korean Church is unique because it was founded entirely by lay people. This fledgling Church, so young and yet so strong in faith, withstood wave after wave of fierce persecution... The death of these martyrs became the leaven of the Church and led to today's splendid flowering of the Church in Korea. Even today their undying spirit sustains the Christians in the Church of silence in the north of this tragically divided land" (Pope John Paul II, speaking at the canonization).

Dear Reader,

It seems a lot of things have changed in the recent past, and we also see this reflected in the seminary in Rome. The average age of Irish seminarians studying with me is approximately 28. We come from very diverse backgrounds, and it is very rare now for someone to come straight from school into the seminary. Typically a student will have firstly completed a University degree before joining the seminary. In my own case, I firstly completed a Bachelor of Commerce for four years in UCC, and then I did a Masters in Marketing in UCD. I then moved to London where I started a marketing consultancy business, with clients mainly engaging in business through the mediums of the Internet and Mobile Phones.

I also studied last year with a former doctor who worked for five years in a hospital before joining seminary, and another student worked as a pharmacist for several years in Cork City. Another student played soccer with Manchester United for seven years, and then played with Norwich City for seven years, and was capped by Northern Ireland twenty nine times. We really are all shapes and sizes.

I am now at the end of my four week placement here in Bantry and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for all your encouragement and support, but especially for your very Christian witness. I would like to extend a special work of thanks to Fr Donal and Fr Anthony for all their kindness, guidance and support. As I depart for seminary I will sure miss Bantry Parish, but I leave very encouraged and motivated.

Culture Night: takes place at Bantry Library on Friday next, September 21st at 8pm with a book reading & public discussion by Fred Caruso. On the night, artistic and cultural organisations across Ireland provide the public with free access to performances, workshops and other cultural activities. Glengarriff author, Fred will speak about the air crash which occurred on September 23^rd, 1962 (50^th anniversary) off the S.W Irish coast. National Digital Switchover Week! 17^th-23^rd of Sept. – and this is a small reminder to all who watch their television using an aerial to make the switch soon, so you are prepared well in advance of the turn-off of the analogue signal on the 24^th of October. This is also another call on Community Groups or locals volunteers and activists to keep an eye on some people in your community who may find the switchover difficult, or who may have no-one to assist them in the switch.

A ‘Digital Switchover Champion’ is coordinating efforts in your area, and we will be holding a free information stand in the Square, Bantry on Friday 21^st of September from 9am to 2pm. BABY TALK.Do you have a baby five months or under? Would you like to meet other parents and get support in caring for your child? BabyTalk is a support programme for parents with babies up to 5 months & is jointly organised & run by the HSE & the West Cork Development Partnership (WCDP). The next session starts in Bantry on Weds. Sept. 19, 11am – 1pm, in the Primary Care Centre on the Quays (follow the signs for the Centre outside the Maritime Hotel). The programme will run for eight Wednesdays in a row and is open to all parents and their new babies. There is no need to book – just come along on the first day with your baby. MALIN To MIZEN 400 mile cycle in aid of CoAction West Cork. 6 local cyclists are completing this 400 mile cycle from Weds. 19^-22nd Sept. They will pass through Bantry at about 2pm on Sat. on the final leg of the journey to Mizen. The cyclists are appealing for sponsorship for this very worthy cause. Yellow sponsorship cards are available in all shops & pubs. An  AIB bank a/c has been set up – A/C no. 936014 – 11330031. All donations will go directly to this locally based service & very welcome. Farewell to Marius

We say goodbye to Marius O'Reilly who has been with us in Bantry for the past month. Marius is a student for the priesthood for Cork and Ross in the Irish College in Rome and has been on pastoral placement here with us. During his assignment he has been in the Hospital almost daily talking and praying with patients, taking classes in ArdScoil Phobail and the Primary Schools, partaking in our Liturgies and has set up this Blog.  God's blessing go with you, Marius!
