We welcome Fr. Martin Keohane and Fr. Sean Crowley to Bantry and pray God's blessing on them as they begin their ministry in the parish. 

The Deep End – Martha Ministers eh?

Mary & Martha are stressed out with all the work they have to do. Jesus has arrived, probably with an entourage who are no doubt hungry. This small passage has created much interest from biblical scholars over the years. For some, it suggests that Jesus is favouring prayer and reflection over action. For others, it justifies the role of women in the Church as concerned with hospitality. Many would disagree, and see Mary’s place at Jesus’ feet as a clear sign of a disciple learning from their teacher. Luke places a special emphasis in his Gospel on the wider circle of Jesus’ disciples, and names the women who followed him.

Luke also uses a specific work to refer to the ‘many tasks’ that Martha was concerned about: diakonia – a word that he uses elsewhere in Luke and Acts to refer to ministry and service in a community. It is from this word that we get the word ‘deacon’. Whatever interpretation we want to make, this is a beautiful passage about service, the importance of prayer, discipleship and ministry in all its forms.

When we are bogged down in the craziness around us, Jesus is clear about the way forward. First, sit and listen to him. This is good advice. Then we may be better prepared for the challenges that we face, whether they be in our homes or our wider communities.

Women she discovered the empty tomb: she was granted an appearance of the Risen Lord early the same day,

identifying her with the ‘woman who was a sinner’ who anointed Christ’s feet or with Mary the sister of Martha

who also anointed him.

Tues. 23^rd July: 16^th Week in Ordinary Time: St. Bridget of Sweden, religious, patron of Europe. Born 1303,

she brought up 8 children & after the death of her husband dedicated herself to an ascetical life. Later she

founded the Bridgettine Order and lived in Rome. She wrote many works about her mystical experiences. She

died in Rome in 1373. She was declared aPatron of Europe in 2000.

Wed. 24^th July: 16^th Week in Ordinary Time:St. Declan; considered one of the pre-Patrician saints. He was of noble blood. Colman, a local priest, baptised him. Later he went to Europe to continue his studies wher he was ordained priest and possibly bishop. He settled in Ardmore & evangelised the Decies country.

Bingo  will  be held at Mealagh  Valley  Community  Hall  on Thursday  July  25th. at 8.30P.M..  Jackpot on the night.   Bus  leaves  Durrus  Village  at  7.45P.M.  and  Bantry  at   8.05P.M..   Your  support   would  be greatly  appreciated.

To Commemorate the Year of Faith the Annual Diocesan Pilgrimage to St Finbarr’s Oratory, Gougane Barra will take place on Sunday September 29^th 2013. Rosary at 2pm. Mass at 2.30pm. The Preacher this year is Archbishop Dermot Clifford of Cashel and Emly. It would be very appropriate for this Year of Faith if Parishes / Religious Houses could organise parish groups to attend the ceremonies on this traditional Gougane Sunday.

The  Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time  

Sunday July 14^th   2013    

At the beginning of the Second World War the Russian Army couldn’t promise any of their soldiers bullets or guns, all they could promise was that there would always be somebody to replace them. That is what is happening to Fr. Donal and myself. We want to thank yourselves, the people of the parish of Bantry, who have been so kind and good to us throughout our time here. We want to thank all the people who have worked with us and helped us along the way. The sacristans, secretary, collectors, altar servers, choirs, ministers of the Word and Eucharist, people who look after the churches inside and outside, the Sisters of Mercy, teachers & Boards of Management of our schools and the many other people we have forgotten. We want to remember also the priests who have served here with us. We know that we have been both privileged and lucky to have been given the opportunity to have worked in the parish of Bantry and while we are sad to be leaving hopefully we can take consolation from that. Both of us ask God to bless you and we pray God’s blessing too on Fr. Martin Keohane as he returns to the parish and to Fr. If you close your eyes & just imagine it, picture it: ‘One day when Jesus was praying alone in the presence of his disciples…’

What was it like? Maybe it was outdoors, in a quiet place, on a mountain. We’re told it was on ‘day’ so it was bright; Jesus may have been slightly away from the disciples but still pretty close to them. They might have been watching closely and quietly having a chat at the same time. They might have been very impressed as they watched him at prayer; & Jesus – although absorbed in prayer – may well have been perfectly aware of their reactions & everything that was going on around him.

But did you ever imagine that this scene could be about you too? One day when you were praying alone in the presence of other parishioners, for example. It happens every time you come to church for Mass, Confession, Baptism, Funeral or Marriage; you come to pray alone in the presence of others of the Lord’s Disciples.

Jesus’ moment o f prayer was obviously a profoundly moving experience for him. He may have been having personal doubts about how he was doing, and in that Jesus represents each of us at one time or another.

No matter who we are or what we do there are times when we feel we’re just not making the connections, our message just isn’t getting through, it all appears to be just a big waste of time. So what does Jesus do? He tests public opinion by asking two questions; ‘Who do the crowds say I am?’ and ‘Who do you say I am?’ With Peter’s answer he knew God’s plan was in fact taking shape.

And for his disciples, then and now, he had a message too: ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine let him renounce himself and take up his cross every day and follow me.’

An imagine, all of that happened ‘one day when Jesus was praying alone in the presence of his disciples’. Isn’t it amazing what can happen when we pray!        

Youth Choir – Coomhola Church  

There will be a youth choir taking place for the months of July and August at Coomhola Church. 

Children from the Community of 3rd, 4th,5th and 6th classes are welcome to join and also teenagers 

are very welcome.  There will be practices taking place on Saturday the 22nd and 29th June from 

7.00 to 8.30 (preferably no parents to stay during practice).  We look forward to seeing as many

Annual Liz Lucey Memorial Run

The Annual Liz Lucey Memorial Run in aid of  Marymount Hospice will take place on July 7th in Inchigeela.

This run includes tractors,cars,cyclists,walkers and Honda 50's.
Registration for tractors,cars,cyclists and Honda 50's will take place at 11.30am sharp at Inchigeela Hall.
Registration for walkers will take place at Gougane Barra at 1.30pm sharp.
Refreshments will be served on the day followed by a huge trad session in the evening.
This is a great day for all the family!

Bantry and District Cardiac Support Group

The June meeting of the Bantry Cardiac Support Group will take place on Tues 25^th. Meeting at Harbour View car park at 8pm for a walk to the Abbey Cemetary or the Beicin walk weather permitting. After the walk we will meet at the Resource Centre Main St. for refreshments & to discuss next seasons events. The meeting is for people who suffered a cardiac event such as Heart Attack, Angioplasty or who have had cardiac surgery or any Cardiac related concerns. Diocesan Bible Study Certificate  

                     

Are you interested in knowing more about the Scriptures?  Have you started to read the Bible but would like a better understanding?We are pleased to announce a new initiative that will open the door to a deeper understanding of the Bible.  The course aims to help participants to become familiar with the different aspects of the Bible through short accessible modules.  A new module will be offered spring and autumn for two years, both in the city and Dunmanway. The first module will be of 4 weeks duration and the others will be six weeks long.  No written assignments or exams are required. Each module will explore a different aspect of the scriptures, where they come from and what they mean.  There will be a variety of different contributors. The first module ‘What is the Bible? – An Introduction to the Sacred Scriptures’ will be offered on four Thursday nights October 3^rd 7.30-9.30pm.  This module will be presented by Fr Ben Hegarty OP and Fr. Sean O’Sullivan.   It will be held in The West Cork Education Centre, Dunmanway.  The cost will be €50 per module.  All welcome. Places limited.
